Dragon's Claw by Karen Chance

5.0

A good friend kindly tracked down a printed copy of this novella as a special birthday gift for me, since I just can't get into reading ebooks, and I'm so glad she did!

Taking place after the last Dory book [b:Shadow's Bane|24104482|Shadow's Bane (Dorina Basarab, #4)|Karen Chance|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1516721971l/24104482._SY75_.jpg|43697970], this is an excellent addition to the series. At this point, the novellas and short stories are integral to the plot and not to be missed, although Karen's unfortunate break from her traditional publisher means her work is a bit harder for readers to find right now (and more expensive to purchase).

As usual, it's non-stop action from the first paragraph. Some faction has developed vampire-killing bullets and drops a huge pile of vamp corpses on the doorstep of the Senate in New York to prove the point. But with the Senate in war mode, the only investigator they can spare is Dory, who has been enjoying her well deserved sort-of-honeymoon with Louis-Cesare.

Determined to keep him out of the way for his own safety, Dory sneaks into Hong Kong and ends up trying to save its supernatural twin city, where graffiti lives and magical tattoos become weapons (I loved Kitty!).

For anyone just starting either the Cassie Palmer ([b:Touch the Dark|67513|Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer, #1)|Karen Chance|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1307391100l/67513._SY75_.jpg|65477]) or Dorina Basarab ([b:Midnight's Daughter|3072254|Midnight's Daughter (Dorina Basarab, #1)|Karen Chance|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1307519250l/3072254._SY75_.jpg|3103274]) series, I strongly recommend following the alternating reading order of publication on Karen's site. The two series have merged into one for all intents and purposes, and it seems that most new readers are not aware of this, which is shame because they are really missing out!

I love Dory/Dorina - especially now that her duel personalities are starting to integrate. She's funny, especially when bantering with her wayward Child Ray. Dory also meets John Pritkin for the first time, and Dory's dragon-shifting roommate Claire makes a great cameo too!
