3.5

This was not the weakest book in the vampire chronicles (so far) but it is not the top 3 either -- perfectly middling.

I enjoyed the outset of this book. Lestat's manic phase was fun to read and engrossing. The deeper into the book I got, however, I lost steam.

I felt like the primary plot was notably not-VC in its tone and handling. Maybe it fits better with the Mayfair books, but I couldn't help but wonder if Anne Rice had outlined a completely unique story and couldn't round it out so she shoved it into a Lestat book. I found myself sort of lazily skimming huge chunks of the last 3rd of the book.

As always, Rice is clumsy with characters who aren't white. Maybe I can make the excuse that this is a Lestat POV so maybe he's grappling with some stuff.

There is absolutely no reason to read this unless you are (like me) a Vampire Chronicles or Mayfair Witches completionist.
