“… I would love to see you burn with splendor. I would love to see your words catch fire with mine.”
Ruthless Vows is the highly anticipated sequel to Divine Rivals. Without giving anything away- this story is about love, magic, and a war between Gods. This is more of a soft, cozy fantasy novel. I enjoyed Divine Rivals and was excited to read this one.
I really, really wanted to love this but was a little bit underwhelmed. I thought the pace was very slow. I was really bored and it took me forever to get through. I feel like not much really happened in the story and if Divine Rivals was a tad longer, it could all have been wrapped up in one book only, rather than a duology.
Now for the good- the characters are extremely likable. It’s refreshing to see such soft and “normal” or relatable characters in a fantasy novel. I love seeing more of Attie and her family in this story, as well as the addition of a new character named Tobias. I loved watching Roman and Violet fall in love all over again, it’s really a testament to their love story. I think Rebecca’s writing is so beautiful and poetic. I still love the magical typewriters and think the concept is unique.
If you’re looking for something cozy and magical, with a beautiful love story, then you’ll probably enjoy this. If you prefer higher stakes and action, then this may not be for you.
