The Lake of Dead Languages by Carol Goodman

4.0

It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, I absolutely LOVED it. It gave quite dark academia, gothic vibes.

The Lake of Dead Languages is set in a boarding school, spreading its love for Latin, exploring past secrets and toxic friendships. There are so many twists and turns that you are constantly on the edge of your seat waiting for the next big surprise. I will try not to include any spoilers so that you get to enjoy them as well. The story follows a former student who returns to the all-girls school called Heart Lake. Jane returns to teach Latin as an adult to the next group of girls at the school. Secrets of Jane's past start to reappear, along with history repeating itself with her group of girls in her Latin class...

The descriptions in this story are astounding. The imagery set was so beautiful, it felt as if I were truly envisioning every scene. The lake felt so mysterious and real. I wanted to take a swim in it as well. The lake was described almost as if it were another character within the story. So I felt really invested in it as well.

I loved how everything interlinked and how the pieces of the puzzles were all slowly unravelled. Some of the pieces I was absolutely NOT expecting... if you know you know. Truly great read and would be happy to recommend.
