Funny, moving, and totally unexpected. I didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I did. Mr Stevens begins as a vivid caricature, but as the novel progresses his human-ness begins to show. What initially feels like a mocking Oscar-Wilde-esque comedy of manners becomes a moving portrait of humanity. Mr Stevens shares a heavily edited and doctored version of his history, perhaps fearing what the truth might reveal about his profession, his personal values, and loyalties.   He seems to subconsciously reflect on whether it was all worth it, while being drawn into repeating the same patterns.
