Annie is an AI robot in self-didactic mode, learning to be a person while owned by a true asshole of a man (we learn early on that he designed her appearance to be as close to his ex-wife's as the company would let him, so his nature is very clear right from the beginning ).
An excellent but high anxiety read! It grips the themes of transhumanism and feminism. I cared about the protagonist SO DAMN MUCH.
The portrayal of an abusive relationship was so spot on that I hated Doug immediately, and that lasted for the entirety of the book. For the last quarter of the bookI was filled with tension that the ending was going to be an abuse apologist story . If you need to know how it ends before you can engage in this type of story: the two of them do not end up happily ever after; his victim escapes although sadly he lives .
I liked the ending and didn't think it was too abrupt. My only complains were minor: like, example, that her learning to program doesn't come up more or really effect the story... it's part of her epilogue, basically, but I wanted to see more of it in the active story within the pages .
