Writing: powerful. Evocative of the South and Africa.
Plot/characters: you are drawn to the characters. You are pulled into their lives and issues. You can’t help but feel for them.
Profundity: yes, it’s about race. It’s an embarrassment of a time if you’re white. But it’s also about God and how God fits into our life. That’s what sticks most for me.

Graphic: Violence, Rape, Sexual violence, and Incest
None of it is gratuitous m, but it can be hard to read.
