I love me a folklore inspired story, especially one set in winter. To start, Brianna/Elyana is truly the star of it all. She is such a strong FMC, she is resilient and brave, kind and compassionate, grounded and relatable. My biggest set back of this book was just that the pacing was a little odd, it had a lot of mundanity in it that I don’t think was necessary but I also was never bored so it wasn’t a major issue. What I think Ivinya captured best was the feeling of falling in love, there was no insta love in this book (thank god). Both the FMC and MMC have their own traumas and histories that give them reason to be guarded, especially when it comes to love. So it was really beautiful to watch them trip into maybe not all out love but definitely something that could be the start of a beautiful romance. The world building is very enchanting and I am hopeful that in the next book we see even more of it. The ending was agonizing (in the best way), and even though I knew Brianna would eventually end up telling the truth, it was still painful to witness. Jian’s reaction was much more of a betrayal than I was anticipating. All throughout the book I feel like the author was alluding to greater powers afoot and I’m really hoping in the next book we really see Brianna come into her own and come back ten times stronger to get her revenge on Elyanna and take her rightful place as queen. But, we shall see.
