Cheerful nonsense. I looked forward to a new incident of rape and dismemberment on every page. As a satiric attack on thought-terminating optimism, this book has long fulfilled its purpose; indeed the problem now facing us is how to read a newspaper or watch television without thinking we live in a depraved and ruinous world. As a boundary-pushing black comedy, the book still has its merits and deserves to be looked at, but anyone expecting anything intellectual only needs to read about three pages to understand Voltaire's theme.
