The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

5.0

This book moved me. Such a beautiful love story. Coming into it, I was barely familiar with the Iliad. I think I had only really seen the Troy movie from the early 2000s with Brad Pitt as Achilles lmao.

Anyway, Madeline Miller makes what is a huge epic story such a moving be digestible story. I’m not sure how overtly romantic Homer’s original story is, but now I am scared of reading the actual Iliad and not seeing Achilles and Patroclus’ beautiful relationship.

My favorite part of the book is definitely the beginning. Seeing Achilles and Patroclus develop romantic feelings for each other. I love love love coming of age love story, particularly when it is as exquisitely developed as this one.

I wanna go into spoilers but I won’t. I’ll just say that this is such a gut wrenching, heart breaking, but also bitter sweet story. Maybe I was just all messed up from staying awake on a trans Atlantic flight, but I was sobbing at the end lmao.

Perhaps I’ll read Circe next but I’m not sure.
