The Righteous by Renée Ahdieh
4.0

Actual rating: 3.5 stars.

I’ve been basically wasting a handful of minutes tagging this post because I just don’t know how to talk about this one. It’s the newest release from Renee Ahdieh in the world of The Beautiful. The Beautiful is a series set in 19th century New Orleans where werewolves, vampires, and fey hide in plain sight. (The Originals vibes anyone?) This one is book #3 and we start off in a completely different direction that we did in books one and two because we follow two completely new POVs. We follow Arjun Desai who is a half-fey, half-mortal and has spent most of his life being viewed by the full blooded fey of the Sylvain Vale as a lesser being. We also follow Pippa Montrose who is a full blooded mortal who ends up stumbling into the world of the fey...to her detriment.

I really expected to miss seeing the world through Celine’s and Bastien’s perspectives but I found the handful of chapters in their POVs to be extremely annoying. Bastien has turned into the Alpha A-Hole we’re used to in other Fantasy series and Celine is so blinded by the need for her new found mother’s affection that she can’t see past the nose on her face. It was truly infuriating to read from their perspectives. I found Arjun to be charming and flawed and adorable. I found Pippa to be less straight laced and annoying than she is in the first two novels. It was fun to see a sort of “fake dating” situation going on when she first stumbles into the world and that being the one and only thing they can think to save her from the fey. I also really loved exploring the world of the fey in this novel. In the second book, I was sort of shocked that we were moving away from the New Orleans setting and it was off putting. But this time around I found it much more enjoyable.

I will say that there are two twists in the last two pages of this one that I’m not sure I loved. One of which most people will probably enjoy if they’ve enjoyed Ahdieh’s other works. The other one I think I’ll only truly know how I feel about it after I’ve read book #4. As a whole, I don’t mind the kind of twist this one is, but it needs to be done well and I need to know the motivations for everyone involved. And I think that’s the most vague way I can explain that one. Overall, I don't love the series and I really haven’t enjoyed rereading the series this time around. Maybe I’ll continue with the next one since it is the final book. I probably won’t reread the first three before hand though.
