Unfollow: A Journey from Hatred to Hope, Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church
by Megan Phelps-Roper
Megan Phelps-Roper was brought up as part of the notorious Westboro Baptist church, a hate-group started by her Grandfather Fred Phelps after the church of which he was assistant pastor broke away in order to preach their increasingly vile invective against, homosexuals, military personnel and Jews, to name but a few. As an adult, Megan, who had been brainwashed her whole life, started to question the church's motives until she could no longer advocate their beliefs. This book details her early life and her dawning realisation that she would have to leave, even though that would mean being cut off from her family forever.
Megan found happiness away from the life she knew, but clearly loves her family and so it was a rather bitter-sweet escape for her. I haven't seen the Louis Theroux documentaries about Westboro Baptist church (yet!) but I have heard about them over the years (although not so much recently) and I can't remember when I first came across this book but I started reading it a few days ago and found it to be well-written and engrossing.
