Gilded Wings
by Jaymin Eve
I think I've read only a few books by Jaymin Eve before. I don't really know why. She's a big name in the reverse harem world and her books get recommended a lot. However, I don't think people ever recommended her books when I asked for new reads. This book found me all on its own though. I saw some character art and it was love at first sight with this library girl and her dragon. Luckily my paperback copy arrived a lot sooner than I had dared to hope!
I absolutely loved the beginning of the book. I loved the library, I loved the two girls working there and being best friends. I loved the vibe of two women maybe not having everything, but still being happy with the things they do have. I also liked a missing book being the catalyst of our heroine discovering that the library is not just an ordinary library and that there is a whole other world out there with dragons, Fae and other magical creatures.
However, I also feel like the elements of this story didn't get the attention they deserved. It feels like the romantic interest(s) of this book are still vague characters we barely got to know on a deeper level. It feels like the world is one big chaos where everything is possible, but where we never really get the chance to just wander around and explore. It also feels like the plot makes an appearance once in a while only to disappear again for a some time.
It somehow feels like this book tries to combine too much. Fated mates, reverse harem, Fae politics, academy, portal fantasy and so on. And although I especially quite liked our heroine attending this school, especially because it helped us to understand the world better, I think this series could have easily been a few books longer and then all the individual elements of the story had gotten way more time to shine. And maybe then I would have also fallen in love with the guys.
But who knows, it happened more often that the second book in a duology is brilliant while the first book is not. I'm entertained enough to at least give the sequel a try!
