Interesting premise for a book (first used as a column premise for "The Atlantic" by this editor, Joe Fassler): ask some living writers to pick a favorite literary passage that inspired their writing and write a short essay about it and their process. Good variety of authors, creative black and white prints based on the favorite passages (gotta love a book with pictures!), essays of three or more pages. I read my favorite authors only, though I would have appreciated an index of the favorite passages as a way to learn about a new author. If I was serious about being a writer, I might want this book on my shelf for inspiration and challenge. Given who I am, my favorite essay was by Marilynne Robinson.
