The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams

5.0

Williams has always been one of my (if not my top favorite) favorite playwrights and I do not think I’m alone in that regard. These two plays are probably his most well known, most produced, and most read in high school classrooms, lol. Under all the drama, trauma, and tragedy of his work there lies a delicate hand. Some sort of element of tenderness and love is always there - even if you have to look hard for it. Some say “Menagerie” was his way of exorcizing his guilt over not being there for his sister more to protect her from his family/the world. Others say “Streetcar” was his way of trying to get others to sympathize with an allegory for the brutality of queer life at that time (Williams was gay). But I think the great summation of his work comes from the man himself. When asked what “Streetcar” was really about Williams said it was, “A plea for the understanding of the delicate people”.
I wont summarize or spoil these iconic works, if you haven’t read them or seen them, you should experience them for yourself. You will not regret it.

Both: (5/5 stars)
