Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson

4.0

"I've seen Steelheart bleed."

It's been almost eight years since my first read of this and I'm happy to have revisited this world and characters. I don't enjoy it quite as much now as I did the first time through. While it's a lot of fun, the characters lack nuance and I couldn't really connect with any of them. It seemed to be trying too hard in certain respects.

Sanderson has developed even more as a writer and storyteller since this story and I think that shows in his more recent work, particularly his more recent YA, which is more comparable to this than some of his fantasy is.

A fun story with a fascinating concept.

Original Review
Brandon Sanderson is a genius in my book. This novel was gripping, thrilling, and an outright exciting read. Sanderson's ability to create characters that excite real emotions is a talent I've seen in very few others. The characterization was beautiful and I found myself getting caught up in all of the action and living along side the Reckoners. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment, which I'm almost sure will be just as, if not more, exciting than this first.
