Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: A Play by Roald Dahl, Richard R. George
4.0
There's no two ways about it, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is completely charming. I grew up loving the Gene Wilder film, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the book was actually fairly close to that movie. There were differences, of course, but a lot of the lines were word-for-word the same. It made me feel nostalgic for my childhood days, splayed out on the couch watching movies with my sister.
Sometimes, if you read a classic children's book as an adult for the first time, you don't get a sense of the magic that younger readers do. That was not the case here. The plot was engaging and fast-paced and the characters were well written. I loved the characters I was supposed to love and shook my head at the ones I was supposed to shake my head at. As a teacher, I was especially fond of the Oompa Loompa song about how kids shouldn't watch too much TV.
This book's status as classic children's literature is well-deserved.
