White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout
3.0

When JLA kept writing that the Wardens in their true forms were pretty:

description

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read a JLA book and I forgot that her earlier works have a distinct type of voice lol. I think I definitely would have enjoyed this book way more in high school vs now, especially when I was obsessed with her Lux series (Roth reminded me a lot of Daemon!!). Despite the cringey writing style, White Hot Kiss was still a pretty fun book!

Modest belongs to losers. Something I am not.

The plot and lore of WHK were definitely interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book about gargoyles before and it was fun to learn how they’re connected to Seraphim and Hell. Also, the slow burn romance omgg. I can definitely picture Ian Somehalder as Roth, especially in his super sassy and flirty moments hehe.

“You need something,” he said, and when I stared at him, he added, “Your face.”
“My face?”
“It’s in need of my kisses.”

Dare I say this, but I actually liked the love triangle in this book?? I hate love triangles with a passion, but I thought it was executed well and avoided many of the cliches that surround love triangles in YA novels. I also found myself liking both Roth and Zayne, and the sides that they represented for Layla. You also get the two best tropes imo, the friend to lovers AND the enemies to lovers trope. LIKE IT'S THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS RIGHT HERE.

However, I was highkey annoyed with Layla throughout WHK. She’s super insecure, both about her appearance and her status as a half demon. She’s also constantly making dumb decisions to prove that she’s capable of protecting herself, and then ends up apologizing for her actions later when she realizes that she’s not.

All in all, WHK was definitely a fun and addicting read. I found myself staying up until 3 am last night because I wanted to just read one more chapter (I ended up reading 10 more chapters until I eventually knocked out lol). I’m super excited to get my hands on the rest of the series, especially after that explosive ending!
