So first off, I need to say how lucky/ privileged I am to have won a digital copy of this book on StoryGraph. I entered the giveaway as the premise of the book was interesting and I was not wrong.
This is a short book and follows Johnathan, a young man who inherits a house gallery after his parents pass away. The house has old painting that’s must be “viewed” and we get nightmarish stories that involved the paintings. These stories are pretty messed up, gory or psychologically disturbing. The story “They Don’t Want to go Back” was a standout.
What adds intrigue is the stories were made from ShadowMyths Sacramancy Cards which the author has wrote a book and YouTube videos on which I think is very cool! I give this a four as I think this book is very good but had the opportunity to be longer and more fleshed out.
The book is also subjective and from my view, the stories have various meanings or interpretations which begs for discussing with others.
As far as short story horror books go, this was a great read and one of the few stories that made me feel a bit unnerved (as a long time horror veteran, that’s a big feat). I hope to see more of Doug Hoppes work down the line!
