The Given Day by Dennis Lehane
4.0

Quite the intense book. It takes place over only 12 months, but the only word I could think to describe it is epic. The scope and depth of the narratives along with all the characters that become involved in the scandal that was the Boston Police Department were really amazing. I'd never read any of Lehane's works before this and was impressed. His research on the era shined through in his presentation of the grit, violence, and cultural evolution of the late 1910s. The characters were real people with both dazzling moments and devastating, destructive faults. Despite its length, I read this in breathless streches over the course of a week because I really couldn't put it down.
