"One of Us Is Lying" is a young adult mystery novel by Karen M. McManus. The story is set in Bayview High School and revolves around the mysterious death of a student named Simon Kelleher.

Simon runs a notorious gossip app where he exposes the secrets of his classmates. One day, five students—Simon, Bronwyn (the brain), Nate (the criminal), Addy (the beauty), Cooper (the athlete), and Simon (the outcast)—are all sent to detention. During detention, Simon dies from an allergic reaction, and it becomes clear that his death wasn't accidental.

The other four students in detention become prime suspects, as Simon was about to reveal damaging secrets about each of them. The novel follows these four students as they try to clear their names, uncover the truth behind Simon's death, and deal with the fallout from their own secrets being exposed.

As the investigation unfolds, the book explores themes of identity, friendship, and the pressures of high school life. The story is filled with twists and turns, keeping readers guessing about who is responsible for Simon's death until the very end.

The novel delves into the complexities of each character, making them more than just high school stereotypes, and ultimately reveals that the truth is much more complicated than it first appears.

Even though I liked some of the book's content, I thought some stereotypes were overdone to the point of irritation. The encounter was hindered by the characters' occasionally overly corny dialogue. A boy in my class also purposefully gave away the end of the story, which diminished the tension and power of the narrative and lessened my enjoyment of it.
