Unfortunately, as relevant today as it was written back then…plus ça change. Certainly, those who want to get a glimpse of what British colonialism was like back then will glean useful insights. The  attitudes present in the book remain no matter how much we wish to believe things have changed.

A bleak book with no heroes - just flawed people and villains. Not a pleasurable read, but one I am very pleased to have encountered and finished. Of course, written from the point of view of a coloniser - but provides enough nuance.

My reading was enhanced by finding a lecture on YouTube with a professor providing historical context and discussing themes etc. Can you believe they are giving away an education for free!
