Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
4.0
Disclaimer: This review comes after rereading the book. I had originally read Vampire academy when it came out in 2007 and I have seen the movie.
First Impressions (First Chapter Thoughts)
It’s been 10 years since I read this book, which is crazy to me (where did the time go?). The first chapter still grabs my attention just like it did originally. Rose’s friendship with Lissa was something I loved. You could tell even in the first chapter that their friendship was special and I wanted to learn more about it.
Afterthoughts
10 years ago if you would have asked me what I rated this book, it would have been 5 stars. While it still holds a special place in my heart, I am going to knock a star off because Rose on occasion annoyed me. Some of her choices definitely showed her age just as Dimitri would sometimes mentioned in the book. She learned from her mistakes and I still loved her as a strong female lead. Lissa, Christain and Mason also made the book fun to read.
“I find more peace with you.”
While it was forbidden I loved the romance between Rose and Dimitri. It was for sure a slow burn, but I loved watching them slowly fall for each other and try to keep everything professional. I also really loved that it wasn’t all about fiery passion. They had really had an understanding about each other.
“The battle cry sort of gave you away. Try not to yell next time.”
The world building was really intriguing to me. I like that there were two different kinds of vampires in the book. The Moroi were much more peaceful and the Strigoi are what most literary vampires are described as. Rose and Dimitri being Dhampir meant that they were always trained to protect the Moroi. Their training scenes were always my favorite.
“And then suddenly he was there, charging down the hallway like death in a cowboy duster.”
This one quote is by far my favorite in the whole bok and has stuck with me for all these years. I applaud Richelle for the ridiocols of this statement while still getting a clear picture who Dimitri is and why he should be feared as a guardian.
In the end, I still love this book and would recommend it to readers who enjoy a good vampire novel and I will continue my reread of the rest of the series.
