It's natural parts of the book feel incomplete; we're lacking character motivation cause the author (a man) would lack the understanding these girls would have. The book tries to not build strong prejudice against their decisions and instead only wanders about the motives. I imagine the book may give a different experience depending on the reader's standpoint - I as a male haven't been a "13 year-old girl" and so cannot measure much of it. I'm gonna correlate this with a female reader, but this is my assumption. I'll level my criticism to pacing and tonal issues so as to not dump to hard on the book.
