Alicia by Lisi Harrison

5.0

Honestly, Alicia is my least favorite character from this series. She's defiant to authority and can't grasp the fact that she needs to learn to follow before she can lead. I can't even describe the disgust I acquired for Nina from reading Invasion of the Boy Snatchers . But in this book I actually sympathized with them. I never considered that Alicia felt that she didn't belong in either the American or Spanish worlds. All of the other members of the Pretty Committee seemed so obvious to me: Massie is a spoiled and socially insecure mess who hides it all with her desire to lead and be in the spotlight (all due to the fact that she used to be an oppressed beta), Dylan is insecure about her weight (because she grew up in the photo shoped world of television), Kristen is ashamed and is limited by her family's social and monetary status (because of the papered poodles she calls peers), and Claire is stuck between the worlds of high end living and the life she left in Orlando, trying her hardest to fit in. But I always thought that Alicia was just an ungreatful little prick, trying to be someone she isn't. She's bound to be a beta in my opinion, but at least I understand her struggle a little more. The same goes for Nina who's just bullied by her status seeking sisters. This just reminded me of why I love Lisi Harrison's books so much. Even though the lives of celebrities and popular kids seem so perfect, they're all going through struggles that we can relate to, making them no different than us. And as the ending taught me, being on top isn't always the option that will make you happy.
