Twins by Varian Johnson

5.0

Maureen and Francine Carter are twins and best friends. They participate in the same clubs, enjoy the same foods, and are partners on all their school projects. But just before the girls start sixth grade, Francine becomes Fran — a girl who wants to join the chorus, run for class president, and dress in fashionable outfits that set her apart from Maureen. A girl who seems happy to share only two classes with her sister!

This book definitely gave me insight into the twin experience. You feel like you’re expected to be half of someone else, instead of your whole self. Maureen and Francine are fighting to stand out. It’s not just a battle of class President, but also a battle of self-confidence, finding yourself, and growing up.

I loved that the girls would go hang out at the mall, because I felt like that’s all I did when I was younger. I particularly liked how some of the mall situations were brought up and handled. You’ll have to read to know what I’m talking about.

If you’re looking for a realistic middle grade graphic novel, look no further. The art is fabulous and it’s a really great and relevant story!!
