Romancing Mr Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

2.0

Before you read my review please read this disclaimer: I only read this book because I’m a huge fan of the friends-to-lovers trope and I’ve seen the hype surrounding this couple all over social media with Netflix’s new season just around the corner. So I have not read the other books in this series and I have not even watched much of the show. I watched the first season and wasn’t blown away.

That said, here is my review of the book. I genuinely liked the first half and thought there were cute moments. I would have liked to see more cute moments or delve into existing ones but I was content. Like most of the bad reviews I’ve seen of this book, I too thought Colin was a bit of an asshole though it can somewhat be explained and as long as that doesn’t stick with his character to future books/episodes then fine. Colin himself even considers himself an asshole but one of the more unforgivable moments for me was when he (most likely) bruised Penelope’s arm and forced her to drink champagne. That was hard to read. Penelope wasn’t blameless either, the fact that she waited until their engagement was announced to pull her Whistledown stunt, and even admitted to her timing being purposeful was a shitty thing to do. Which brings me to the second half of the book. There are hardly any cute or even spicy moments. It’s all about Whistledown, which I understand this book is part of a series and this was a big deal / big reveal for the rest of the books/show however for someone who was just reading for the love story I was severely disappointed. I hope the show changes nearly everything about their story while maintaining the friends-to-lovers tension.
