Rise of the Evening Star by Brandon Mull

3.0

You know, I enjoyed the first one a lot. Like 5 stars, recommended to others, really thought it was fantastic. This book though... I don't know, it just didn't hit that same level of magic to me. The plot was interesting enough, but the characters didn't feel as genuine to me which I found frustrating. Maybe I was just so wrapped up in the world building in the first book that I just saw them more clearly in the second book when the euphoria of a new world was no longer a problem.

I did like the addition of people from various backgrounds from around the world being introduced, like Tanu, and new villains, but ultimately I felt most of the characters just seemed really one note. I just really wanted some depth to the characters more than just surface value.

I will still be reading on in the series, but I'm hoping the next book will bring some of the magic of the world from the first book.
