A Rogue of One's Own by Evie Dunmore

3.0

2.5 stars. I'm of two minds about this book. As a romance, it's very fun. Lucie is a fierce protagonist. Tristan, the male protagonist, is the rogue with a soft heart. He has served England's military in India, and has a tattoo that is a turning point in the story. I'm unsure how I feel about this plot point. I think that the author is attempting to cast a light on England's colonialization. However, I'm not sure her intentions are clear enough, and as a result, the tattoo feels like cultural appropriation. There's also the implication that Tristan is bisexual, a welcome development for the genre, except that the depiction of his former lover feels highly stereotypical. Good aims - poor execution. Also, at 444 pages, the novel felt about 100 pages too long.
