Make It Sweet by Kristen Callihan
4.5

The book starts off with the two main characters, Lucian and Emma, both at low points in their careers. Lucian, a major league hockey player, has just suffered from a career ending brain injury, and lost his fiancé. Emma, an actress, has just been axed from the TV show that made her famous – and I mean that both literally and figuratively as her characters was beheaded. When she arrived home after hearing the news, she found her boyfriend cheating on her with their waitress from the night before. They both end up staying at Rosemont, a beautiful estate in California. Rosemont is the home of Lucian grandmother, Amalie. He grew up there, and after his accident, moved back and began to renovate it. Emma’s grandmother is friends with Amalie, and so when she needs a place to hide, Amalie is more than happy to host her seeing it as an opportunity to play matchmaker.

I adored this book. As always with Kristen Callihan, the writing was superb, the character development was spot on, and the pacing was terrific. I was never bored, and consistently eager to know what would happen next, however it was light-hearted enough that I did not feel emotionally drained. My favourite thing about Callihan’s writing is her ability to balance the emotional with the light. You are able to feel Emma and Lucian’s emotions without needing to include ridiculously angsty plot points.

I knew from about the 20% mark this would probably be getting at least 4-stars stars, and by the 75% mark that it would likely enter my “will always recommend” list. Why? The maturity level of the characters. They were able to grow as individuals and figure out their priorities without having a massive fight where they break up. It’s (sadly) rare in romances for that to happen. There are so many ultimatum’s given, and choices made that separate people, and I LOVED that Emma and Lucian were able to disagree with each other’s decisions without completely decimating the love they had for each other.

Another cute addition was the tie-in with Dear Enemy, as Emma is Macon’s co-star. I loved being able to revisit Delilah and Macon and see what they were up to.

On the whole, I CANNOT recommend this book enough. It is top tier, absolute perfection, and the ideal summer read!
