"Forrest's #Win" is a book I've put off for a long time. I knew there were some seriouls difficult things involved with SA and recovery and I wasn't emotionally prepared to read it. Then I was and it is beautiful. It is a story that starts with building the background and friendship of the two main characters. It sets a firm base needed later in the book and shows who they are in the "before" period. The attack is on page and difficult to read and detailed, but it is brief and earlier in the book. There is a lead up period so it's a part that can be skipped because the book is more focused on the "after." Just take note that this scene does show Forrest's thinking about what is happening and it relates to his feelings later in the book.
There are a lot of great things in this book. The way the characters come together to heal and use what they both learn in therapy, is great. the language can be a bit text book with their conversations, but the way they speak is a new way for them to have open communication and at this point these are new ways for them to express their feelings so the language is going to be a bit formal.
The best thing about this book is that the characters are changed because of the attack but they are still themselves. I have read a lot of books where a character is assaulted and who they are at their core is completly changed. They basically become completly different people. Forrest and Blake do change but their core selves in the same. They grow into a strong partnership and their journery is at time very difficult but also beautiful.
