Before the Devil Breaks You by Libba Bray

5.0

I've already talked about this series in depth and plenty enough in my previous reviews, so I will not delve into the critical aspects concerning this one since I would simply repeat my self over, and over again. In case you'd be interested in a more critical review of what I liked (or not) I refer you back to "The Diviners" and "Lair of Dreams".

So, "Before the Devil Breaks you". What a book. What an extraordinary book! I remember saying in one of my reviews, how I sometimes would find the narration a little bit too slow, and a tiny bit tedious, and oh boy, oh boy, has Bray listened! In comparison to the previous instalments, this one felt so incredibly quick and fast-paced, for my delight. Bray is a master at lyricism and poetic (and slightly dramatic) descriptions, which she proved in the first two books, but this time around, she has surprised me with an enticing, exciting and thrilling writing style. Bray has you hooked from the first page to last one, making it hard for you to put the book down (needless to say, I finished in only a couple of days).

I was also pleasantly surprised by the turn of events taking place right from the very first chapters: all the strings have untangled, the plot has unravelled, and all the Diviners (and non-Diviners) have finally come together. Just seeing all my favourite characters interact and facing challenges together had me shivering with joy (I can't even tell you how much I've come to really care about them, God, it feels like they are my children or something). Also, the relationship-dynamics are such a treat to the reader because it's clear they are not pivotal to the unfolding of the events, but incredibly entertaining to say the least (I'm a sucker for Sam+Evie and Theta+Memphis, Hard Sucker).

I don't need to say more than this, because if you're here, you probably already know how amazing this series is, so I don't need to reinforce it again. In addition to this, unlike with the previous books, while reading this third I wasn't overcome with interesting thoughts or ideas or insights, and that's when I know that I'm really, fully enjoying my reading experience: when I'm so hooked and invested in that story that somehow I forget that I'm even reading. Props to Libba Bray for crafting such a marvellous, splendid book (also, series).

Now I just can't wait to get my hands on the fourth and last instalment of the series. I need it NOW! (But apparently there'snot even a publishing date yet, so I'll just patiently wait)
