Wow this book was so jarring, heartbreaking, maddening and deep. The law jargon at the beginning of the book was slightly off putting (only because I’m not clever enough to understand or retain such things) but that didn’t even compare once the pages started flowing. Each page got better and better. And in no way is that related to the pleasure of the subject matter or any unsavoury problematic issues, but rather that it SO believable. I was in awe of the writing, the plot, the characters - everything. It hits HARD. I’ve never felt pain for a character in a book before now and that’s all down to Lee’s gorgeous writing. The way she describes Jade’s feelings and experiences is second to none and I FELT her pain. And the fact that this is her debut places this novel in my favourites category. I cannot wait to read more of Ela Lee’s writing
