The Maid by Nita Prose
2.0

I have a bone to pick with this book, and it’s going to be a while so sit down.

Molly is very clearly an autistic person, but it is never explicitly stated in the book. Everyone just treats her differently and dances around her like a child. I wish Nita Prose would’ve simply stated that she was an autistic individual. Molly is treated as naive and oblivious to everything, which puts a sick feeling in my stomach. As someone who has worked around autistic individuals, THEY ARE NOT NAIVE AND OBLIVIOUS. THEY KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. Also everyone is so mean and cruel towards her. Rodney easily took advantage of her. I wish Molly would’ve been written in a better way than she was. It’s so important to have autism spectrum disorder representation, but not if you’re going to write it poorly.

I also kept waiting for them to say, “Oh, by the way, Molly was actually the one who killed Mr. Black, but we didn’t tell you because Molly is an unreliable narrator.” 😬 Even though Molly didn’t end up killing Mr. Black, she still helped clean the room afterwards.

Rant over. The book was very predictable and mediocre. I was interested in the other books, but not anymore. Check out the game “This Bed We Made”! Very fun murder mystery with a maid main character. Much better than this.
