The Swallows
by Lisa Lutz
Reading only campus novels lately. I liked the prose in this one, Lutz was good at the tone shifts between the various point-of-view characters. Very fast-paced, there was a lot to propel the plot forward. While engrossing in the moment, this one just felt gross later. The pervasive misogyny, the number of irredeemably evil characters, including teenagers who are so unimpulsive they can design and implement multi-year revenge plots.
This one didn't work for me because it didn't feel rooted enough in reality to make the characters believable. And it wasn't fantastical enough to make its dark themes allegory.
