Before I say anything, I will say that this is a decent mafia romance read. However, It’s almost unfair to have this be considered Book 2 in a series that starts with the epic high of Lights Out. It’s impossible not to compare the two even though they have completely different vibes.

Nic (aka Junior) and Lauren’s erotic second chance mafia romance just doesn’t hit the same as Josh and Ally’s dark romcom with kink vibes. Although we have the same elements of “he’s stalking her because he cares”, we’re missing the light hearted humor and tenderness from before. There are jokes and funny lines here and there but there for sure isn’t a “balaclava” level moment.

I listened to the audiobook, which again, is also probably unfair since Lights Out had stellar voice acting and production that-as far and I can tell-seems to have upped listener expectations for duet narration. Teddy Hamilton, as talented as he is, was just not at his best here. As Nic and his family he did fine, but his Josh and Tyler takes were awful. Complete mischaracterizations of both like he never looked into the source material for inspiration. It was irritating every time to witness whenever Josh had a scene.

As a standalone, the story is fine. The erotic scenes are even great.
As book 2 in a trilogy that started with Lights Out, it’s eh. Just okay.
