Shadow Study by Maria V. Snyder
5.0
This review of Shadow Study originally appears on Laura Plus Books.
Oh goodness, it’s been so long since I’ve written a review that I’m a little worried I’ve forgotten how to. Today I’m back with a review for the lovely Maria V. Snyder’s new book, Shadow Study. It’s the first in the new Soulfinders series, fourth in the Study series and seventh in The Chronicles of Ixia. You guys have no idea how excited I was for more Yelena and Valek. They’ll always have a place in my heart.

Unfortunately, I was reading this book while I was in a reading slump which means I had a little trouble going through it. However, I honestly believe that my slump wasn’t caused by this book. Even though I gave the plot pace 3/5, I feel as though everything would move a lot faster for most people. Everything moved amazingly well. The perspectives rotated with the chapters and each one ended with a cliffhanger. Before you can dwell, you’re thrown back into another perspective right where it ended with a cliffhanger last time.
The writing. Oh how I love the writing. I love the way Snyder has the ability to create a person (magician) rather than just a character. Valek and Yelena have grown so much but they’re still just as adorable. There were also many flashbacks into Valek’s past. They were woven into the story effortlessly and gave answers to many Valek mysteries. If you’ve read the Study series then you NEED this book. YOU NEED IT.
But it gets better. The freaking bombshells hit me so hard. They were crazy and kept on coming. Bombshells that I’d laughed off and bombshells that I’d never see coming. AND THE ENDING. God the ending. Obviously, I’m not going to spoil it but I promise that no one does endings like Maria V. Snyder. If you’re looking for a book that will rock your world, you’ve found it.

I honestly believe that everyone needs some Maria V. Snyder in their life, even if they haven’t read any books in the Study series or The Chronicles of Ixia. After all, Shadow Study is the first in a series and she makes sure that you understand everything. Maria V. Snyder and her fantasy is so freaking mind-blowing. It’s hilarious and action-packed all at once. Please give it a go!
