She and Her Cat by Makoto Shinkai, Naruki Nagakawa
2.0

This book is four vignettes of four women and their cats. There are only four chapters, each chapter told from the paired perspective of a lonely woman (they’re all lonely) and her cat (the cats are not lonely). While each vignette stands on its own, the characters from other chapters are interwoven into each other.

I loved the unique premise of this book, but was truly disappointed in the execution. Maybe two men in their 50’s aren’t the ones to tell this story. (Why is every woman with a cat single and lonely?) It’s hard to connect to the characters, both cat and human, in a single chapter. It is possible something is lost in translation; it definitely reads as a translated work. The sentence structure is very plain and straightforward throughout. The dialogue is cumbersome and unnatural. There is absolutely no poetry in the language used. If you squint you may see a single metaphor. Unfortunately I can’t recommend it.
