Squirrel Meets World by Shannon Hale, Dean Hale
4.0
I received an advance reader copy from NetGalley. When I originally selected this book to read, I thought it would be a graphic novel and was excited to hear about a new Marvel superhero, especially as told by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale. Even though it wasn't exactly what I imagined, there's a lot to like about this book. I think it will appeal to Marvel fans and fans of cute, quirky stories for 3rd-6th/7th graders.
It also does a couple great and somewhat uncommon things for standard superhero books that still manage to be subtle. I like that she isn't conventionally beautiful, but still has great self esteem. I like that she has a best friend who uses ASL and gives another perspective on the varied types of disabilities. I like that she doesn't have a tragic back story, just two parents who think she's amazing. I enjoyed the humor. The story takes some time to get going, but overall is cute, fun, and has a good message without (I think) being too preachy.
