Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck

5.0

steinbeck has always been tempted by endless travel. he finally packs up his truck, named rocinante, and brings along his poodle charley to set off on a great american cross country road trip. in an effort to discover what america is really all about, steinbeck comes across a hurricane, giant redwood trees, his hometown that doesn’t feel like home anymore, prostatitis, and the hard reality of the divided south in the 1960s. so many adventures all to end up back where he started.

4.5 rounded up to 5! steinbeck is absolutely hilarious. so much better reading him when i don’t have to analyze for school. it felt like i was just reading his personal journal and i really loved it. he thinks so deeply and makes me want to be more mindful of the details around me. the way he writes about people and nature is the definition of “romanticize your life”. after reading this, i feel like i just traveled around america in a time machine. would recommend and read again (but have a dictionary ready).
