A Deeper Sleep by Dana Stabenow
4.0

Yikes, this was a bit dark, particularly by the end when all the threads were being drawn together. This is a tale of miscarriages of justice, and a community's frustration at a criminal getting away with it time and again due to lack of concrete evidence, clever lawyers and manipulated juries, when everyone and his dog can see that no only is the man very guilty, but needs locking up for the future safety of society. And with time and the repeating disappointment of these not guilty verdicts, people lose faith in the justice system, and start to consider taking things into their own hands. And when you realise what is happening, do you want to be a part of the community and turn a blind eye; or do the right thing and turn them in, even though it would mean stepping on to the side of truely worthless skum? There are no simple black and white answers to this question, and the ending felt like a bit of a creeping dark cloud over the community.

We're back in the park for this story. Jim Chopin's set up in his new little trooper base in Nilitna and he and Kate are settling in some kind of routine, whilst worrying that it's coming up to the time when he usually gets itchy feet in relationships. Louis Deem, a very unpleasant man, is on trial over the death of wife number three - all obviously beaten and murdered by this nasty mysogynist - and yet once again the verdict comes back as not guilty. Then he's getting himself engaged to a young and foolish newcomer to the park, and a woman and her son are shot in cold blood. No one wants him to get away with the crime this time. And this single minded aim blinds people to all kinds of things.

Interesting story in the series.
