I'll admit I'm confused. I was entranced by the fable-like storytelling, with the way Sankofa is referred to, revered, and feared. I loved the casual blending of something rather a lot like magic with advanced technology, even if the two do not necessarily play well together.

However, there was a really strange lack of purpose to Sankofa. I don't know if it was her age or her circumstances, but it kept her from feeling entirely real to me, even within the bounds of her story.

The writing is both direct and lyrical, which I really appreciate about Okorafor as a writer. It gives the story such a unique cadence and makes it stand out. This is the kind of story that was made to be an audiobook.
