One Piece, Vol. 1: Romance Dawn
by Eiichiro Oda
Originally read: 2010
This starts off with Luffy as a young soldier who wants to join the pirate crew of his favorite role model. Eventually he wants to be the famed "King of the Pirates." When he is a bit older, he sets out on a little dinghy to make a name for himself-crew of one. It was an odd start but intriguing. Alvida was unexpected but characters like Zolo caught my attention for perseverance. Strange cast of characters. Not too sure what to think of just this first volume but worth continuing.
**Series improves as it progresses
2024- I enjoyed paying attention to what might have first attracted Luffy to being a pirate. A bit of admiration perhaps in those he meets, but otherwise I feel the mysterious obsession and the elusive reference to ' One Piece' is a bit too obscure. It isn't well developed, I think that might be the point as I question it ever being achieved, with how long this series now is (and still going!!) Luffy's easy going demeanor- I can see why some would feel drawn to him. Even if just in curiosity.
