The Girl the Sea Gave Back
by Adrienne Young
I received this arc from the publisher for an honest review.
4.5 stars!
This was a solid 4 stars for most of the book, but I really enjoyed the ending, so I bumped it up half a star.
It was really fun to be back in this world. Having read Sky in the Deep about a year and a half ago, there were a lot of things I forgot. That was ok because this is a completely separate book with only mentions of the other main characters.
I liked the split POVs. I really enjoyed the story of both Halvard and Tova and I rarely got them mixed up unless I had to stop in the middle of a chapter and forgot which one I was reading. I loved how the chapters went through one thing from one point of view and then backtracked a little bit to tell what happened to the other person and then kept going. Especially since the characters were hardly ever together, it was fun to see what was happening to both of them. This also happened with the flashbacks when they had no idea each other existed. It touched on events that happened in Sky in the Deep which was such a cool tie in.
At times, this book was slow moving, but I never found myself bored. The pacing always picked up before long. The chapters were short, but I never felt they had a lack of information or storyline.
The ending was so wonderful. I don’t much care for battle scenes, but these were not long (although at some points rather gruesome) and kept my attention. I appreciated that there was still some story left after the climactic battle that the whole book was leading up to and something that I was really looking forward to finding out.
Overall, this was a beautifully written story that I really enjoyed reading. Adrienne Young definitely knows how to tell a wonderful story!
