clairvoyant 's review for:
Troilus and Criseyde
by Geoffrey Chaucer
I read The Canterbury Tales + some of Chaucer's other short poetry/dream visions before this which maybe gave me a skewed idea of what I was in for. I really do love Chaucer, but some parts of this poem were a struggle, even for me. Book II seriously had me wanting to tape Pandarus' mouth shut, lol. One of the things I love about Chaucer is his sharp wit and humour, but this text is really lacking in that department. I suppose it makes sense considering Troilus and Criseyde is a tragedy, but it's still a shame.
Very fascinated by Chaucer's references to literary authority in this one, as well as his depiction of women/Criseyde. I'd recommend reading the prologue of "The Legend of Good Women" immediately afterwards, as it continues with the discussion of how women are represented in medieval literature. Geoffrey is a real one #feminist
