If my understanding is correct, this is the authors toe-dip into adult novels. The story did have some adult themes, but still felt very "youth" while reading.
This book was a relatively enjoyable folkish/lightly fantastical murder mystery. The murder mystery is the main plot and all of the other elements are only contextual, so know that you're not getting much folklore or fantasy if you read reviews before deciding to dive into the story.
It looks like some room was left at the end for a series spin-up or at least a sequel, and I hope the author eventually goes that route. I'd be interested in reading Rook's story from his perspective and seeing if/how his relationship with Weatherly grows/changes.
