The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias

5.0

Thank you Gabino for sending me an ARC! This is my first ARC ever and it is greatly appreciated.

I love this book so much. It's hard to say that I enjoyed it though, because it's horrific. Gabino Iglesias has such a unique style, blending real-world horror with a hint of the supernatural, and this is perfectly showcased in this new novel. When Mario's family needs help in the face of a health crisis, they are abandoned by the systems that are supposed to support them. This story is heart-wrenching and all too familiar. To try to save his sick daughter, Mario contacts an old colleague and makes a business deal that will change his life forever. After his first hit, his life spirals into darkness. To me, this book is about the horrors of capitalistic society and the failure of the American dream. This is a recurring theme in Gabino's work, one that I'm always excited to see explored in the horror genre. And as always, it's crazy violent in the best way. A lot of scenes had me sick to my stomach. It's a new favorite from one of my favorite authors, and I can't wait to see what comes next.
