Gallant
by V.E. Schwab
“ [gallant] is not a romance, it’s not a a sweeping scope tale. it’s supposed to be the kind of story that you read in one sitting and then it haunts you for a while.” - v.e.schwab
first of all thank you so much titan books for gifting me both an ARC and finished copy of gallant by v.e. schwab and for having me on for this tour. the quote above is one from schwab’s instagram story but is one that i found to be true from my first sitting when i picked up gallant for the first time to start it, late at night. i ended up having to pause after finishing part 1 of the book just because i’d began to find it creepy once olivia arrived at gallant despite her mother’s warnings from her journal, reminding me of the movie crimson peak in which the protagonist had been warned against moving to crimson peak by the ghost of her mother (fans of the movie would likely enjoy gallant although it’s not a novel that has romance in it). i found the writing in gallant to be perfectly honed to write a creeping gothic story and unsettle the reader. however, i’m someone who prefers reading scenes that help to advance the plot even just a little bit this book sometimes felt stagnant and is why i did struggle finishing it.
