Still Midnight by Denise Mina

An absolutely tremendous book.

Every part of this book is wonderful. It takes one of my least favorite crime novel clichés, alternating point-of-view from detective to criminal, and utilizes it perfectly. Such thematic depth - the personal (variations on families, life bleeding into work, the limits of friendship...) and the political (immigration, class, poverty, crime...).

The book is atmospheric in the way I love best - lovingly rendered details of Glasgow, both high and low. Tense and lively throughout. The characters are all alive, even the bit players. The dialog is snappy, the emotions are real.

This book is crime fiction at its best. If you want to see what this genre can be, give it a try. A candidate for my top book of 2012.
