Of Mice and Men
by John Steinbeck
Of Mice and Men really is the kind of book that breaks your heart, but still makes you want to read it all over again. It's a story of two unlikely friends – clever George and gentle giant Lennie – Steinbeck shows us what hope looked like during America's Great Depression.
The pair drift between California ranches, scraping together work where they can find it. What keeps them going is their shared dream: a modest farm they can call their own, where Lennie can tend to his beloved rabbits and George can finally find peace. But Lennie's innocent love of soft things, combined with strength he doesn't understand, keeps putting them both in danger.
I've read this book before, but I still cried! It's a short novel that asks big questions about what we owe each other, and what it means to protect the people we love.
